EU Schuko vs UK Type G Sockets in the UAE: Which Do You Need?
Most UAE homes are wired with UK-style Type G sockets, while our glass wall sockets are European Schuko (Type F). This guide helps you decide which one you actually need before you order.

Short answer: most UAE homes use UK-style Type G (BS 1363) sockets on a nominal 230 V / 50 Hz supply. The glass wall sockets and most smart plugs sold by SmartHomes.ae are European Schuko (Type F), not Type G.
Choose Schuko only if you deliberately want EU outlets, for example for European appliances or a design project where the owner has chosen EU sockets. If your appliances have UK three-pin plugs, keep Type G sockets. Any change to fixed wiring must be done by a qualified electrician and must follow your local authority's rules.
What socket type do UAE homes use?
Homes in the United Arab Emirates mostly use Type G sockets, the British-style outlet built to BS 1363, on a nominal 230 V / 50 Hz supply. Some older buildings still have Type C or Type D outlets. Most appliances sold locally come with Type G three-pin plugs.
Our glass sockets are different. The glass wall sockets in our range are European Schuko (Type F) sockets, and almost all of our smart plugs are EU type too. They are not BS 1363 sockets and they will not accept a UK three-pin plug. If you need to match the sockets already in your home, our wall sockets are probably not the right choice. The rest of this guide explains when they are.
| Feature | UK Type G (BS 1363) | EU Schuko (Type F) |
|---|---|---|
| Plug pins | Three rectangular pins | Two round pins |
| Earth connection | Third (top) pin | Earth clips on the sides of the socket recess |
| Fuse in plug | Yes, a fuse is fitted in the plug | No fuse in the plug |
| Usual in UAE homes | Yes, the common type | No |
| What we sell | Not offered as wall sockets | Our glass wall sockets and most smart plugs |
What is a Schuko (Type F) socket?
Schuko is the common socket across much of continental Europe. It takes a plug with two round pins, and the earth connection is made through metal clips on the sides of the recessed socket. Type F sockets are designed for a 230 V supply, the same nominal voltage as the UAE grid.
In our range, Schuko sockets are often combined with other functions in one tempered-glass frame built to the Italian modular standard (sizes such as 3M or 4M). Examples include the Luxion Schuko Socket with USB A+C and Glass Frame (from AED 73) and the Luxion Schuko Socket + Night Light (from AED 52). There is also the Luxion Modular Track for 3 Sockets (from AED 118), which takes Schuko and USB modules that are sold separately.
Some product names mention a narrow or slim socket. Check the product page and photos to confirm which plug that outlet accepts before you order. Do not assume it takes a UK plug.
Can you plug UK appliances into a Schuko socket?
Not directly. A Type G plug's three rectangular pins will not fit a Schuko socket, and a Schuko plug will not fit a Type G socket. That is why choosing the wrong outlet type is the most common reason a socket order turns out to be useless.
Adapters exist, but if every appliance in your home has a UK plug, fitting Schuko sockets and then using adapters everywhere is the wrong approach. Adapters add bulk and extra contact points, and some cheap ones are poorly made. If you do use an adapter, make sure it is properly rated for the appliance's load and keep it away from high-power appliances such as heaters, kettles and irons unless it is rated for them. Remember too that a UK plug's fuse only protects the appliance's flexible cable while that plug is in use.
The same check applies to smart plugs and power strips. The Luxion 16A Wi-Fi Smart Plug (from AED 47) and the Meross MSS425F Smart Power Strip (from AED 102 with 4 Schuko sockets and 4 USB ports) are EU-type products. Confirm the plug and outlet type on the product page before buying, and make sure it matches both your wall socket and your appliances.
When an EU socket makes sense
Schuko sockets suit a specific set of situations:
- You own European appliances. If you moved from continental Europe and brought appliances with Schuko plugs, EU sockets let you use them without adapters.
- A design or renovation project where the owner chooses EU outlets. Some owners want a matching tempered-glass look across switches and sockets, and accept that the sockets will be Schuko.
- Dedicated points for known equipment. For example, a desk or media wall where you know exactly which devices will be plugged in.
- USB-only charging points. Our USB wall chargers with glass frames have no mains outlet for a plug, so plug type matters less. You still need to check the box size and wiring with your electrician.
Stay with Type G if your appliances have UK plugs, if guests or future tenants will expect standard UAE sockets, or if you are not sure. Mixing socket types in one home can confuse people later.
Switches are different: why a touch switch is not tied to plug type
A light switch does not accept a plug, so the Schuko versus Type G question does not apply to it. A glass touch light switch can therefore suit a UAE home even if you keep Type G sockets everywhere.
Switches still need checks of their own:
- Back box size. UAE installations commonly use square BS 4662 back boxes, while many European switches are made for round or other box formats. Compare the frame and mechanism dimensions on the product page with your existing boxes.
- System compatibility. Some series only work with their own modules. For example, the Luxion Marble Touch Light Switch, 1 Gang (from AED 90) is compatible with Luxion modules only.
- Wiring needs. Check whether a neutral wire is required and whether the switch suits your lighting load.
Our switch and socket combos combine both functions in one frame. Remember that the socket part of those combos is Schuko.
Ask your electrician and landlord first
Replacing a wall socket is fixed wiring work. It must be carried out by a qualified electrician and must follow the rules of your local authority, such as DEWA in Dubai, ADDC/AADC in Abu Dhabi or SEWA in Sharjah. Before ordering, ask your electrician:
- Whether EU Schuko sockets are acceptable for your installation and your authority's requirements.
- Whether the frame size of the product you have chosen fits your existing back boxes, or whether the boxes would need changing.
- Whether the circuit and earthing are suitable for the load you plan to connect.
If you rent, speak to your landlord first. Dubai's unified Ejari tenancy contract does not allow alterations without the landlord's written approval. If changing sockets is not an option, look at products that need no rewiring, but still check that their plug type matches your wall sockets.

Frequently asked questions
What socket type is used in UAE homes?
Mostly Type G (UK-style, BS 1363) on a nominal 230 V / 50 Hz supply. Some older buildings have Type C or D outlets.
Are SmartHomes.ae wall sockets UK Type G?
No. Our glass wall sockets are European Schuko (Type F), and most of our smart plugs are EU type too. They do not accept UK three-pin plugs.
Can I plug a UK appliance into a Schuko socket?
Not directly, because the pins are different. Adapters exist, but if your appliances have UK plugs, keeping Type G sockets is the better choice.
Who should choose Schuko sockets in the UAE?
People with European appliances, or owners of design projects who have deliberately chosen EU outlets. Their electrician must agree that this is suitable.
Do touch light switches depend on socket type?
No. Switches take no plug, but you still need to check the back box size, the neutral wire requirement and module compatibility.
Can I change sockets myself in a rented flat?
Socket replacement must be done by a qualified electrician under local authority rules. In Dubai, the Ejari contract requires the landlord's written approval for alterations.
