Smart Locks in Dubai: Apartments, Villas and Holiday Homes

Most smart locks sold for European doors are retrofit models that sit over an existing euro-profile cylinder. Here is how to check your door, choose remote access and plan for guests, heat and flat batteries.

Short answer: for most Dubai apartments and villas with a euro-profile cylinder, a retrofit smart lock such as Nuki or Yale Linus is the simplest option. It mounts on the inside of the door over your existing cylinder, so the outside of the door and your physical key stay as they are.

Check before you buy: cylinder type, door thickness, whether a key can stay in the outside of the cylinder, how you want remote access (Bluetooth only, or a Wi-Fi bridge), keypad or fob needs, battery life and the lock's operating temperature. Tenants should get the landlord's written approval first.

If you are looking for a smart lock in Dubai, start with your door rather than the lock. Retrofit smart locks fit onto the inside of a door that already has a euro-profile cylinder, the keyhole shaped like a rounded top with a narrow tail beneath it. They turn the key or thumb-turn for you and are controlled from your phone. If your door has this kind of cylinder, a retrofit lock is usually the least disruptive choice for an apartment, villa or holiday home.

If your door uses a different locking system, or the cylinder is not compatible, a retrofit lock may not fit and you would need to change the cylinder or look at a different type of lock. The sections below explain what to check, how remote access works and what hosts of short-let properties should plan for. You can browse all options in our smart locks category.

Retrofit vs replacement smart locks

There are two broad approaches:

  • Retrofit locks mount on the inside over the existing euro cylinder. The outside of the door does not change, and your normal key still works. Examples are the Nuki Smart Lock Go, the Nuki Smart Lock Pro 5.0 and the Yale Linus L2.
  • Locks supplied with their own cylinder, such as the Nuki Smart Lock Ultra, which comes with a universal cylinder. This involves swapping the cylinder in your door, which is a lock change rather than a simple add-on.
  • Full replacement locks (handle sets with built-in keypads) replace more hardware on the door. We do not cover them here.

For tenants, the retrofit approach matters. Under the unified Ejari tenancy contract, alterations to the property need the landlord's written approval. A retrofit lock changes less, but you should still ask, and keep the original parts so the door can be returned to its previous state.

Check your cylinder (euro profile) in 2 minutes

  1. Look at the keyhole shape. A euro-profile cylinder has the familiar keyhole silhouette and is held in place by a single screw through the edge of the door, visible when the door is open.
  2. Check the inside. Is there a thumb-turn, a keyhole, or a handle with a separate lock? Note how far the cylinder sticks out from the inside fitting, as retrofit locks need a certain amount of cylinder to grip.
  3. Measure the door thickness and the cylinder length from the fixing screw to each end. Compare these with the lock manufacturer's compatibility guidance.
  4. Test the key behaviour. Many retrofit locks recommend a cylinder that can still be operated from outside with a key while a key or adapter is in the inside. Check the manufacturer's requirements for your specific model.
  5. Check the lock mechanism. Note whether the door has a multipoint lock or a lever that must be lifted before the key turns. Some retrofit locks handle this better than others, so check before ordering.

If anything is unclear, take photos of both sides of the door and the cylinder edge, and compare them with the manufacturer's compatibility checker before you buy.

Remote access: Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and bridges

Retrofit locks talk to your phone over Bluetooth when you are near the door. That covers auto unlock as you arrive and locking from the corridor. To check the lock or open it from elsewhere in Dubai or abroad, the lock needs an internet connection, either built in or through a bridge.

  • Yale Linus L2: the Yale ConnectX Wi-Fi Bridge adds remote app control, lock status checks and alerts for up to 4 Yale smart devices. Place it within Bluetooth range of the lock and in reach of your Wi-Fi.
  • Nuki: check each model's specification to see whether Wi-Fi is built in or a separate bridge is needed for remote access.

Villa entrance doors can be some distance from the router. Check Wi-Fi coverage at the door before relying on remote access. Locks generally use their own app and bridge rather than general-purpose hubs, so check compatibility before assuming a hub from our smart hubs range will control your lock.

Keypads, fingerprint and fobs for family and guests

Not everyone in the household will want to use a phone. Nuki offers several accessories:

Before buying a keypad for an outside wall, confirm it is compatible with your exact lock generation, and check its outdoor and temperature ratings. To see who is at the door, a battery video doorbell such as the Botslab R801 pairs well with a smart lock. Our security cameras cover entrances and gates.

Holiday-home hosts: codes per stay

For short-let hosts, the main benefit is not handing over physical keys. A practical setup:

  • Give each guest their own virtual key or keypad code, limited to the dates of the stay, and delete it at checkout.
  • Keep separate codes or keys for cleaners and maintenance staff, so you can see who used which.
  • Add remote access (a Wi-Fi bridge or built-in Wi-Fi) so you can check the lock status and help a guest who is locked out.
  • Keep a physical key with a trusted person nearby in case of a flat battery or connectivity problem.

Check in the manufacturer's app how time-limited access works for your model before you rely on it for bookings. If your building or community has rules about door hardware, follow them.

Heat, batteries and backup keys

Doors facing the sun, especially villa doors and outdoor-facing keypads, can get very hot in summer. Check each lock's and keypad's operating temperature specification against where it will be fitted. A lock on the inside of a shaded apartment door faces very different conditions from a keypad on a sun-facing villa wall.

  • Batteries: the Nuki Smart Lock Pro 5.0 is listed with up to 9 months of battery life. Real-world life depends on use. Enable low-battery alerts and change batteries early before you travel.
  • Backup key: retrofit locks keep your existing cylinder, so a physical key remains your backup. Keep one somewhere you can reach.
  • Wiring: battery locks do not need mains wiring. If you add anything that does, such as a mains-powered doorbell or a new socket for a bridge, the fixed wiring must be done by a qualified electrician and follow your local authority's rules (DEWA in Dubai, ADDC/AADC in Abu Dhabi, SEWA in Sharjah).

Frequently asked questions

Will a Nuki or Yale Linus lock fit my Dubai door?

These retrofit locks are designed for doors with a euro-profile cylinder. Check your cylinder shape, cylinder length and door thickness against the manufacturer's compatibility guidance before buying.

Can I fit a smart lock in a rented apartment?

The unified Ejari contract requires the landlord's written approval for alterations. Ask first, and keep the original parts. A retrofit lock changes less on the door than a full replacement lock.

Do I need a bridge to open the lock remotely?

Bluetooth works only near the door. For remote access you need internet connectivity. For Yale Linus L2 this is the Yale ConnectX Wi-Fi Bridge. For Nuki, check whether your model has Wi-Fi built in.

Can family members open the door without a phone?

Yes, with accessories. Nuki offers a keypad with a 6-digit code, Keypad 2.0 with PIN and fingerprint (one version adds NFC), and a Bluetooth fob.

What happens if the battery runs out?

With a retrofit lock your existing cylinder stays in place, so you can still use a physical key. Enable low-battery alerts and keep a spare key accessible.
